"Sexual Harassment in the Workplace: Four Perspectives"

This panel will address issues of sexual harassment (SH) in the workplace from four perspectives: an attorney who has expertise in SH, two psychoanalysts who have treated both victims and perpetrators of SH, and a psychiatrist who works with impaired medical professionals. We wish to explore individual and systemic factors that cause SH and ways we might decrease its frequency.

Panel Members:

  • Barbara Moss, JD, Attorney at Law, spent many years specializing in workplace discriminaiton cases, including sexual harassment cases. She describes her work as the intersection of law and gossip.
  • Tom Campbell, MDpsychotherapist and psychoanalyst in private practice.  Training and supervising analyst and faculty member of the St. Louis Psychoanalytic Institute and Nashville APP program.
  • Marsha Robertson, MSWpsychotherapist and psychoanalyst in private practice.  Training and supervising analyst and faculty member of the St. Louis Psychoanalytic Institute and Nashville APP program.
  • Reid Finlayson, MDAssociate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Behavioral Health Vanderbilt University School of Medicine; Vanderbilt Comprehensive Assessment Program, Vanderbilt Faculty and Physician Wellness Program Center for Professional Excellence/Journey Pure
  • Volney Gay, Ph.D. (moderator) is Professor of Religious Studies, Anthropology, Psychiatry at Vanderbilt University and VUMC. Supervising and Training Analyst, the St. Louis Psychoanalytic Institute

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the panel discussion, attendees will:

  1. Integrate the behavioral and personality factors that contribute to SH.
  2. Appreciate the role of the “third” in the SH dyad.
  3. Understand better how the legal system and professional boards adjudicate allegations of sexual harassment.
